Class of 2022

“I am so lucky to be at a school where the proper precautions are taken so that we can still have some sort of a traditional college experience,” says business administration and communications student Sierra Lockhart ’22. Lockhart is an admissions ambassador and is involved in activities and organizations across campus. The pandemic has changed what students can do, when and with how many other people, but, Lockhart adds, the College is also working hard to maintain a sense of normalcy during unusual times.

Lockhart, a member of the Student Activities Board and the school’s step team, Triple C Step, notes that COVID-19 restrictions have affected her extracurricular activities. The Student Activities Board, which brings social, cultural and educational programs to the college community, has moved most of its events online. The Step Team is too large to hold practice in its normal space.

In the dining hall, meals are prepackaged, and Parkhurst staff serve students food, replacing self-serve stations. Safety restrictions have also been put in place in residence halls— limiting the number of students in common spaces and requiring students to wear masks outside of their rooms. “All of this is to protect the students,” explains Lockhart.

To Lockhart, Cedar Crest’s culture of care is apparent. “Our community cares for each other and wants to keep each other safe,” she says. This is why students, faculty and staff have all been diligently following the College’s health and safety guidelines.

Having the option to come back to campus to learn and work in person has been incredibly important to Lockhart. “Learning through a screen is a lot harder for me, so having the opportunity to safely come back to campus and learn in person is something that I value,” she says. “I’m also grateful that I’ve been able to return to work while feeling safe and having flexible hours.”
