Ongoing Community Partnership Experience Application
The Ethical Life: Moral and Social Responsibility is a sophomore level, three credit course. This course provides students with the opportunity to study the major theories of ethics and social justice, and explore their own values and beliefs, in context of an individual's responsibility to the community. The course is designed to enhance the process of learning and self-exploration by enabling the students to put into immediate practice the ideas they discuss in the classroom. The course is composed of two interdependent elements: a once a week class that meets for one hour to discuss the theories of ethics, community and social justice and a 28 hour community partnership placement where students provide a needed service that benefits the community directly
After School Program:
Cedar Crest students work with elementary aged students to complete homework assignments. Each day includes special activities as well.
Boys and Girls Club of Allentown:
This after school program provides a safe, educational environment for children that helps them to develop in areas of fitness, health, life skills, career development, leadership and the arts. Cedar Crest students assist with mentoring and tutoring children at the club.
Cedarbrook Nursing Home:
This placement provides students with the opportunity to work with residents of the nursing home by creating one-to-one relationships. Students play a special role in providing an extra degree of care and friendly interaction through visiting, taking walks and aiding with activities.
Community Bike Works:
This agency provides inner city children with meaningful work ethic alternatives to gangs, drugs and the streets. Cedar Crest students will be working with inner city boys and girls ages 9 to 17 in a one to one tutoring environment.
Da Vinci Discovery Center:
This agency is a science center that encourages learning through the inquiry method. Cedar Crest students assist visitors in exploring the science center, encouraging children to investigate science concepts, and provide tours for groups.
Daybreak Transitional Center:
Daybreak is a drop-in center for persons who are, or have been in treatment for mental illness and/or chemical use/abuse, HIV/AIDS, as well as the elderly. The purpose of the agency is to prevent homelessness and promote healthy living by offering basic services, self-sufficiency programs and supportive counseling. Cedar Crest students interact with the members in a stable and comfortable environment by assisting in daily program operations.
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital:
Good Shepherd is a rehabilitation hospital for profoundly disabled adults. Cedar Crest students assist wheelchair-bound residents during activity periods, and may accompany them on weekly field trips.
KidsPeace “TeenCentral.net”:
TeenCentral.net is a unique website developed by KidsPeace that connects teens around the country and throughout the world. TeenCentral.net provides teens with a wealth of problem solving resources, and offers support, direction, and guidance on an international level.
Luther Crest Retirement Community:
Cedar Crest students will work with residents of Luther Crest in the Health Care Center and Assisted Living facility through visiting, assisting with activities, and transporting residents to various events. Students may also be asked to escort residents to off-campus doctor appointments or activities.
Phoebe Home Nursing and Rehabilitation Center:
This agency is a not-for-profit nursing home with skilled care, assisted living, a dementia unit and a range of rehabilitation services including short term and outpatient care. Cedar Crest students help with resident transports, as activities helpers and social visitors.
Roosevelt Elementary School:
Roosevelt Elementary School is a community school that combines the best educational practices of a quality school with a wide range of vital in-house health and social services to ensure that children are physically, emotionally and socially prepared to learn. Cedar Crest students work with elementary school students in after school programs such as Fitness Fusion, Homework Club, Math Club, Writing Club, and other various family engagement events.
Trinity Soup Kitchen:
Trinity Soup Kitchen in Bethlehem offers meals on-site to members of the community in need. Cedar Crest students have the opportunity to assist with meal preparation cooking, serving and cleaning of the noon time meal as well as interacting with the guests.
