The purpose of the Alternative Spring Break program is to provide educational opportunities for students to participate in service projects throughout the East Coast of the United States and experience diverse community life and cultures during their spring break. The week typically includes hard work, community interaction, time for reflection and lots of fun.
Students interested in the program do not need any previous experience. Applications to be a part of the program are available in early October. To become a part of the program, students complete an application and group interview. Once the students are chosen to be a part of the program, the group works together to raise the funds needed to cover the cost of the trip, they plan activities for the travel to and from the site, plan meals for the week, plan the schedule of activities and learn about the community they are going to serve. The funds that are raised for the trip cover the site fee, insurance, transportation (in vans), lodging, food and entertainment.
