Spanish

Expand your career options and marketability with a major or minor in Spanish.

Hartzel Hall Virtual Tour

In today’s global society, understanding another language and culture can provide you with a competitive edge in the workplace, as well as a greater connectedness to your worldwide neighbors. Today, Hispanic citizens are the fastest-growing market segment in the United States—a country that is currently home to 50 million Spanish-speaking consumers. This makes a Spanish major or minor a smart choice for students with a wide variety of career goals.

Bilingual college graduates are in increasing demand in many fields, including:

  • Business and advertising
  • Education (K-12 and college)
  • Finance and banking
  • Government agencies
  • Hospitals and health care facilities
  • Media and entertainment
  • Public relations

The Cedar Crest College Advantage

A unique curriculum
Our courses aren’t just an extension of high-school Spanish: Here, we offer immersion-based courses with a holistic focus. You’ll learn to speak the language, as well as explore Spanish literature and modern Hispanic culture. You’ll also discover how Spanish can enhance your future career.

Taught by native speakers
Each of our Spanish courses is taught by a native speaker of Spanish who is immersed in Hispanic culture. This enables our faculty to better educate you about Spanish language, context, and culture.

Double majoring: Yes you can!
Our Spanish programs pair easily with most of our other academic programs. We offer accelerated and evening courses, and the major requires just 30 credits to complete, while the minor requires only 18.

Customized course selection
Our Spanish major requires just two courses (SPA 301 Conversation and Composition and SPA 302 Advanced Conversation and Composition). For the rest of your Spanish courses, you select those most appropriate for your individual interests and career goals.

Study abroad
We encourage Spanish majors and minors to pursue educational opportunities in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. For example, we help students connect with families in Spain who host them while they take college courses taught entirely in the Spanish language.

Mission Statement

The Spanish program provides excellent instruction in Spanish language acquisition, as well as the study of Hispanic cultures and literatures. It also provides a variety of learning opportunities in the classroom and in extracurricular activities, including study abroad. Students in the program will develop language proficiency in Spanish in the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The program encourages its students to think critically, to question their cultural assumptions about the Hispanic world and to immerse themselves as much as possible in a Spanish-speaking community to improve the practical competence required for specific career purposes.
