Writing with style. Strong critical reading and thinking skills. Creativity. Introduction to a wide variety of ideas and cultures. What career path wouldn’t benefit from this type of experience?
As an English major at Cedar Crest College, you will master these skills—and more—while preparing for a career in writing, editing, publishing, media, public relations, marketing or business.
Our graduates have gone on to master’s and doctoral programs at the University of Arizona, Lehigh University and other top colleges and universities. Others have embarked on rewarding careers in publishing (at HarperCollins Publishers, Rodale Inc., TV Guide), business (at Air Products, Dun & Bradstreet Inc., MTV) or education.
During your studies here, you will engage in passionate discussions about works of literature and your own work, fostering your growth as a writer, critical thinker, and human being. Our curriculum introduces students to writings from multiple genres, from poetry to fiction to nonfiction.
Highly qualified faculty
Our professors are literary scholars and authors. Their collective portfolio includes journal articles, poetry, short stories, essays, and books about writing, literature-to-film adaptations, and an anthology of Victorian prose.
A unique curriculum
Our College offers courses that you won’t find elsewhere. We cover topics such as American horror (Hitchcock, vampires and zombies), Native American literature, Arthurian legends and quests, British fantasy and gothic literature, and more.
The literary life
Preterite (our campus literary club) helps sponsor frequent visits to the College by published writers of novels, short fiction, poetry and nonfiction. The club also schedules trips to literary events, such as writer’s conferences and plays.
Internships
Our students have interned with newspapers, magazines, television news organizations, public relations offices and marketing firms. They also gain invaluable professional experience on campus as literary magazine editors, teaching interns for literature and writing courses, and assistants in the Alumnae Museum.
Publishing opportunities
From your first semester here, you may submit original works to one or more of our student-run publications: Pitch: A Journal of Arts and Literature, Onyx (a juried collection of campus literary works), or The Crestiad (our student-run newspaper).
Writing portfolio
Students who major in English create a portfolio in their senior year designed to impress a prospective employer or graduate school.
Study abroad
Watch literature come to life: Our English department study abroad trips enhance the study of literature through travel to the British Isles, including London, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. We also sponsor trips to other European destinations, such as Florence, Italy.
The mission of the English program, as a liberal arts discipline, strongly promotes the overall mission of Cedar Crest College—in particular, the College’s broad principles of “scholarship, liberal arts, creativity,” “women’s leadership,” and “global connectivity.” The English major offers students a solid fundamental background in American, British and World literature; allows students to develop strengths in creative, scholarly and professional writing; and invites students to explore more specialized areas such as linguistics and critical theory. The major is designed to prepare students for graduate study and for careers in teaching, publishing, business, government, journalism, advertising and other language-related fields. More generally, the discipline of English enables students to better understand and respond to their world through the spoken and written word, both within the academic setting and beyond.
