Many students pursue additional majors, minors or certificates in addition to the criminal justice major. The following degree combinations are just a glimpse into the possible options available to you as a student at Cedar Crest. By adding just one or more additional courses to your criminal justice major—and pairing it with the right elective package—you can easily enhance your degree.

To ALSO Earn a Child Welfare Certificate…

Start with: Criminal justice major with the juvenile studies elective package

Add: 1 course

This degree combination offers students with an interest in working with juvenile offers a greater understanding of the issues surrounding juvenile behavior and the juvenile justice system. By selecting the juvenile studies elective package for the criminal justice major, you will also earn a child welfare certificate by adding just one course.

Juvenile studies elective package courses include:

  • CRJ 201 Addiction, Psychopathology, and Crime
  • CRJ 301 Juvenile Justice
  • SWK 303 Human Behavior and Social Environment* OR PSY 250 Life Span Development
  • SWK 304 Child Abuse Maltreatment and Neglect

To earn the child welfare certificate, you must complete:

  • SOC321 Family as a Social Institution - 3 Credits
  • *SWK 303 Human Behavior and Social Environment – 3 Credits (students interested in the Child Welfare Certificate should select SWK 303 in the Juvenile Studies elective package)

To ALSO Earn a Human Resources Certificate…

Start with: Criminal justice major with the ethical leadership elective package

Add: 3 courses

Students pursuing the ethical leadership elective package in criminal justice will build the skills necessary to make ethical and humane decisions. The following courses focus on how to dispense justice fairly and ethically. By adding just three more courses, you will also earn a human resources certificate from the College.

Ethical leadership elective package courses include:

  • CRJ 206 Class, Race, Gender, and Crime
  • CRJ 316 Crime and Public Policy
  • CRJ 331 Leadership for Women in Criminal Justice
  • BUA 239 Employment Law

Add these courses and earn a human resources certificate:

  • BUA 220 Human Resource Management 3 credits
  • BUA 320 Attracting, Selecting, and Retaining Talent 3 credits
  • BUA 325 Compensation Management 3 credits

To ALSO Earn a Psychology Minor…

Start with: Criminal justice major with the criminal behavior and deviance elective package

Add: 5 courses

Learn to examine human behavior from a social, psychological and environmental perspective. These areas can influence behavior; effective control of behavior often involves understanding each of these elements.

Criminal behavior and deviance elective package courses include:

  • CRJ 201 Addiction, Psychopathology and Crime
  • CRJ 306 Corrections
  • CRJ 311 Crime and Place
  • PSY 309 Abnormal Psychology OR PSY 310 Forensic Psychology

To earn the psychology minor, you must add:

  • PSY 100 Introduction to Psychology 3 credits
  • PSY 250 Life-Span Development 3 credits
  • Plus 9 additional elective credits (3 courses) in psychology
